Recommended English Classes

ESL Tutorials at The PLACe Before enrolling in classes at Miramar College, you should take an English placement test because your skills in reading and writing affect how you do in ALL your classes.

The tests are given by the Assessment Office. There are two tests: an ESL test (for students learning English as a second language) and an English test (for native speak-ers of English and those who have completed Advanced ESL or the equivalent).

Your test result card will show your reading level (R followed by a number), your writing level
(W followed by a number) or your ESL level (a number from 6 to 10). It will also indicate what course(s) you should take first.

The following chart shows the sequence of English courses

Placement Test  Level Recommended Courses
   ESL     English 6
  ESL    English 7
  ESL    English 8
  ESL    English 9
  ESL    English 10
  EPT  W3, R3  English 50, Writing  English 55, Reading
  EPT  W3, R3  English 51, Writing  English 56, Reading
  EPT  W3, R3  English 101**, Writing  English 105**, Reading
     English 205

**SDSU accepts either 101 or 105; most UCSD colleges accept 101 and either 105 or 205; USD requires 105.
English 51 and 56 may be taken at the same time.
If you do not take them at the same time, the English Department recommends taking English 56 first.
