The Mission of the Music Industry Institute is to prepare teens for the 21st century by
developing their interests and skills in music.


Programs
oldepicentre is an all-ages music venue in San Diego. Shows including Alternative Rock, Punk and Hip-Hop occur weekly, usually from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Music training ranges from instrument lessons, to recording engineering, to event production and management. As the skills of teens develop, they are put to work managing oldepicentre's event production business "oldepicentre Events" and recording studio. Future businesses will include a Record Label and Artist Management Group.

Results
• Since opening in October of 1999, over 300 young performers have appeared on oldepicentre's stage in front of audiences estimated at 20,000.
• Over 225 teens have participated in music industry training workshops.
• Many teens have volunteered as work interns and a core staff of 6 teens has developed.
• Programs are increasing in depth and quality with Live Sound Engineering, Recording Studio Engineering, and Performance Production courses beginning this fall.

Music Industry programs are supported by grants and donations of equipment and technical assistance from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, Neighborhood Arts Program.
