The CEO instructor, Tommy Peterson, has been trained and certified by NFTE to teach the NFTE Business Fundamentals and BizTech curriculum. Tommy has taught over 600 students from diverse ethnic and income backgrounds for South Bay Community Services and now Harmonium, Inc. Tommy also connects with students through his experience in owning several music industries and clothing businesses.
Curriculum

Each CEO class develops students’ entrepreneurial skills and attitudes through an exciting, interactive presentation of course material based on the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship’s award winning program.

Classes begin with an assessment of each student’s special interests and skills. The syllabus is then tailored to meet the class’s needs. Active involvement of the student is a top priority. Topics are thus taught in a manner and time that is most relevant to student’s lives. For example, if students one day start talking about a great advertisement on TV, the instructor may teach marketing that day, rather than at the end of the course period per the developed syllabus.

Each class is taught with enthusiasm for real world experience. Discussion of business practices involves topics like music, fashion and cars that mirror teen culture. Coursework builds on students’ lives and personal experiences. Fieldtrips transport students to exciting 21st century workplaces such as MP3 and Sketchers.

Business Creation & Community Service
At the end of the course students create a business plan. Students are encouraged to follow-through and start their own businesses. They are given assistance in registering their business developing the budget, and obtaining capital. Other students are encouraged to volunteer their new skills to assist organizations like town councils, computer technology centers, and mentoring programs.

The CEO philosophy is that financial success to people is worth more when they use their success to help others and give back to their communities.

Evaluation

As required by funders, each student is assessed for basic entrepreneurship skill level and “at risk” behaviors. Quizzes may be given throughout the course period. At the end of the course period, students skill progress is assessed through a post-test. Students are also surveyed to determine if their previous “at-risk” behaviors have decreased, and if their self-esteem has increased. A general survey assessing the quality of the course and instructor is completed. Students are also asked to write essays describing their experience. A report summarizing the results is presented to the students and organization. Statistics are complied into a yearly report for customers and funders.

The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Inc. (NFTE -- pronounced "nifty"), founded in 1987 and based in New York City, is an international nonprofit organization that has introduced 28,000 low-income and at-risk young people to the world of business and entrepreneurship by teaching them how to develop and operate their own legitimate small businesses.
