Loni Berry

   

Loni Berry received an undergraduate degree from Brown University, where he studied music. Berry's professional career began in New York City when he teamed up with then "Dreamgirl" Loretta Devine, Berry worked as Devine's music director for seven years. During this time, he was involved with several theaters in various capacities: music director, stage manager, actor.

Berry returned to Brown University to study playwritting with the late George Houston Bass and Pulitzer Prize winner - Paula Vogel. While at Brown, Berry directed George C. Wolfe's COLORED MUSEUM for the American College Theater Festival at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. Berry then enrolled in the Yale School of Drama as a student director, assisting Lloyd Richards as he directed August Wilson's TWO TRAINS RUNNING. After Yale, Berry accepted a teaching position at Williams College in Massachusetts, where he remained until 1996 when he joined the faculty at California State University San Marcos, Berry also teaches acting at University of California, San Diego.

Berry received a Theatre Communications Group/National Endowment for the Arts Director Fellowship, which allowed him to study with Tadashi Suzuki in Japan and Peter Minshall in Trinidad. His play ...LOVE, LANGSTON (a collage of poetry and short stories by Langston Hughes) has been performed at Seattle Repertory Theatre and The Hartford Stage Company. He has directed for both Africa Arts Theatre and The Public Theatre in New York, and the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Most recently, Berry has organized CULTURE COLLECTIVE, a San Diego community theatre group, BRER RABBIT is their first production.
