Student Awards

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women offers the following awards:
The Jean Stone Dissertation Research Fellowship
A $3,000 fellowship made possible through the generosity of Mrs.
Jean Stone.
Criteria: The student must be registered and enrolled in a Ph.D.
program at UCLA, must be engaged in research on women and/or gender, and
must have advanced to candidacy by July 1, 2002.
Application: Qualified students should submit a 3-5 page dissertation
abstract, a statement describing how the funds will be used, a current
CV, and two letters of recommendation from faculty members, one of which
must be from the candidate's chair.
Deadline: April 5, 2004 by 12 Noon
The Paula Stone Dissertation Research Fellowship
A $3,000 established by Mrs. Jean Stone to honor her daughter,
Paula Stone.
Criteria: The student must be registered and enrolled in a Ph.D.
program at UCLA, must be engaged in research focusing on women and the
law with preference given to research on women in the criminal/legal justice
system, and must have advanced to candidacy by July 1, 2002.
Application: Qualified students should submit a 3-5 page dissertation
abstract, a statement describing how the funds will be used, a current
CV, and two letters of recommendation from faculty members, one of which
must be from the candidate's chair.
Deadline: April 5, 2004 by 12 Noon
The Constance Coiner Graduate Fellowship
A $1,500 fellowship which honors the life and continues the work
of Constance Coiner, Ph.D. 1987, who died along with her daughter, Ana
Duarte-Coiner, on TWA Flight 800, June 1996. For more information on this

Criteria: The student must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program at UCLA
and be in engaged in research focusing on feminist and working-class issues,
must demonstrate excellence in teaching and a commitment to teaching as
activism, and must have advanced to candidacy by July 1, 2002.
Application: Qualified students should pick up an application at
the Center for the Study of Women office, 288 Kinsey Hall.
Deadline: April 23, 2004 by 12 Noon
The Elizabeth Blackwell, M.D. Award
A $500 award made possible through the generosity of Penny Kanner,
Ph.D.
Criteria: For a publishable research report by a UCLA graduate
or undergraduate student in the sciences on the effects of hormones on
memory and mood in women's brains.
Application: Qualified students should submit a publishable paper
on the above topic, a current CV and two letters of recommendation from
faculty members.
Deadline: March 15, 2004 by 12 Noon
The Mary Wollstonecraft Dissertation Award
A $1,000 award made possible through the generosity of Penny Kanner,
Ph.D.
Criteria: The student must submit a completed UCLA Ph.D. dissertation
on women and/or gender which makes use of historical materials and methods.
Application: Qualified students must be nominated by a UCLA faculty
member, must submit a one-page dissertation abstract, the completed dissertation,
a current CV, and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be
from the candidate's chair (usually the nominating faculty member).
Deadline: May 5, 2004 by 12 Noon
The George Eliot Dissertation Award
A $1,000 award made possible through the generosity of Penny Kanner,
Ph.D.
Criteria: The student must submit a completed UCLA Ph.D. dissertation
on women and/or gender utilizing historical perspective in either literature
or the arts.
Application: Qualified students must be nominated by a UCLA faculty
member, must submit a one-page dissertation abstract, the completed dissertation,
a current CV, and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be
from the candidate's chair (usually the nominating faculty member).
Deadline: May 5, 2004 by 12 Noon

the above awards will be presented at a special CSW Awards Luncheon to
be held in June.
A Reminder! CSW also offers TRAVEL GRANTS for UCLA
students doing research on women and/or gender. These grants are for travel
expenses related to research or presentation of a paper at a professional
conference.

Kinsey Hall). Deadline for the Fall competition is October 15, 2003, and
April 14, 2004 for Spring.
