PAIR - Pauma
American Indian Reservation
The Pauma Band of Luiseño (Mission) Indians is located in the northeastern
corner of San Diego County, in the foothills of Mount Palomar about 65
miles from downtown San Diego. The reservation itself feeds into the Valley
Center-Pauma Unified School District, a rural district in North San Diego
County, which is heavily agricultural in nature. The PAIR project opened
in the Spring 2002 and is available to the approximately 295 students
enrolled at Pauma in grades K 8, with a high Hispanic and American
Indian composition of 60.7% and 32.5%, respectively (California Department
of Education, 2000). The project has initiated with youth at the elementary
level to supplement existing after school homework-based programs with
computer-mediated activities adapted from La Clase Mágicas
curriculum. We expect the computer equipment to be significantly increased
and/or upgraded through the Tribal Digital Village project funded by a
Hewlett-Packard Digital Village grant. Equipment to support remote tutoring
and mentoring using web-cams and electronic whiteboards will also be installed.
CASA will provide the educational content for the infrastructure provided
by the Digital Village grant.

Served
Due to the distance between the site and UCSD, the number of undergraduate
students that can travel the long distance to assist in the activities
is limited while we form partnerships between the local colleges/ or universities.
Despite the shortage in undergraduate students, this site has been operating
with the assistance of 2 CASA staff, and community volunteers.
